  1. Kernoghan Says:

Did the Kernoghan’s come from County Donegal?

  2. Admin Says:

Indeed the Kernaghan (or O’Kernaghan) family name is listed in County Donegal along the coast. The map also shows their ancestry in County Sligo slightly to the south. Have you done much research into your Irish heritage?

  3. Sean Says:

Firstly the map looks great and is very informative. you have listed the name cooke on the map What county have you got it in and is the the irish origin cooke family. Also is the information on the map correct ie based on historical fact.

  4. Admin Says:

Cooke is listed in County Wicklow near the border of County Carlow. The map was actually handed down to my wife and I from her father who had it researched by a local historian. We have also had customers confirm their place of ancestry as correct.

The map shows McGeraghty from County Mayo (West Coast). It also shows a McGeraghy a little further north along the coast in County Leitrim. Many times the family roots are the same with a slightly different spelling.

  10. Susan Kelly Says:

I come from a long line of Irish people but could not find any of my ancestors names. My great-grandfather ‘Coyle’ came to America from Ireland in the mid-1800′s; my great-grandmother ‘MacMahon’ married him in Ireland a few years before immigrating and the ‘Kelly’ side of the family moved here in the early 1700′s. Why can’t I find any of my ancestors?

    Thanks for the help.

  11. Admin Says:

I apologize but it appears that the last update to the website did caused a problem with the search function.

Coyle (O’ Coyle) is listed in County Donegal
MacMahon (or Mc) is listed in Counties Monaghan, Clare and Louth
Kelly (O’ Kelly) is listed in Counties Down, Tyrone, Kildare, Dublin and Roscommon.

  16. Tommy Says:

has gallagher always been from donegal

  17. Admin Says:

Indeed, Gallegher has always been connected to County Donegal. If you click on the map on the website it will open up a larger section of the map. If you click on it again, it will magnify it which will show County Donegal and you’ll see O’Gallagher.

Also here is a link to a book about County Donegal which lists O’Gallegher and some history for you

  19. Admin Says:

Shortell appears to be a variation of Shortall and is located in County Kilkenny on the map. Here is a link to a message board about some of the Shortell/Shortall family history.

  22. Stephen Kelly Says:

Above, Admin says, on Dec 7th, [ POST 11 ] Kelly/O’Kelly is from a list of Counties that does not include County Cork, and County Clare. I am only “watered-down” twice, so I have that fact from the horses mouth. My Dads Mother was a Singleton, and his Grandmother, Mary Shanahan. They were all from those counties, including that devil of an O’Kelly that snuck in and worked his charms!Any info would certainly be helpful and appreciated!

    P.S.
Also re: [POST 17] ; this may be way off, but my wife is Italian, and her cousin was nicknamed by her Grandmother as “TIGHE” as it means TIGER in italian.

  23. MAY Says:

My grand father came from Derry, I do not see our family name MAY on the list, do you have a listing anywhere else?

  24. Mc Cracken Says:

I understand McCracken comes from County Down can they be traced to a paticular. My Grandfather said they liven near the coast and could row across to Scotland. I cannot find much info regarding my relatives in Ireland through ancestory.com. Is their anyplace on the web or that I could write to for documentation–interested in back to the 1700′s. Thanks

  25. Admin Says:

The map shows McCracken being from County Londonderry, northwest of County Down. I would try to do some searching with this in mind.

  26. Jennifer Borik Says:

Looking for the Howley name in County Mayo. Any records?
